In 2020, Prolex Media introduced the “Winnipeg Checklist” to shine a spotlight on local businesses we love so you can love them too.

In this post, we’ve curated five local Mother’s Day gift ideas from the Winnipeg Checklist to make it easier for you to find the perfect gift.

We explain what makes each of these vendors so unique and mom-friendly, and if you want to learn more you can watch our Winnipeg Checklist episode on each vendor.

1. Plantiel

Plantiel is a boutique plant shop that started doing pop-ups in spring 2019. They source beautiful, excotic plans as well as ceramic pots, fertilizers, soil mixes, accessories, and many more.

If your nurturing mother has a green thumb, Plantiel is a great place to pick up a plant to grow her exotic collection. In our Winnipeg Checklist video below, Nathaniel walks us through their cozy plant shop while giving us some tips for plant care.

And even if your mom isn’t quite Mother Nature material, Nathaniel also gives some suggestions for beginner plants that are resilient and still brilliant!

Note: Plantiel is currently moving shops. In-store shopping is paused until further notice, but they still deliver to your door and ship nationwide!

2. Jenna Rae Cakes

Does mama have a sweet tooth? If so, Jenna Rae Cakes serves up hundreds of flavours through their famous macaroons. Their “no rules” approach to flavours capture some of our favourite snack food and treats (such as Lucky Charms, Dunkaroos, or Fuzzy Peach) and give you a sweet nostalgic trip through your taste buds!

In our Winnipeg Checklist video below we talk to Ashley about how the pandemic pushed Jennae Rae Cakes to adapt with curbside and online orders through their website and Skip the Dishes. They are now accepting Mother’s Day pre-orders on their website, and even have a Jenna Rae Cakes and Sweet Treats recipe book.

Encased in elegantly designed packaging, Jenna Rae Cakes is a perfect ready-to-gift present for your mom. Visit their website to pre-order for Mother’s Day

3. Shrugging Doctor Beverage Company

After all the hard work it took to raise you, your mother deserves to kick back and relax with a nice glass of wine. For that you’ll have to try Shrugging Doctor Beverage Company: a producer of wine, mead, sangria, cider, spirits and other alcoholic beverages based in Winnipeg.

Founded in January 2017 by two 18 year old kids, by 2018 Shrugging Doctor had grown to become the largest winery in Manitoba’s History, and continue to innovate and revolutionize the liquor industry in Manitoba.

Their concoctions are fruit-forward and rich, with such flavours as raspberry, cranberry, and sangria. You can find their products all over Manitoba, but they also offer a number of delivery options in Winnipeg as well as ship everywhere in Canada. Cheers to mom’s everywhere!

4. Black Market Provisions

We aren’t suggesting you procure illegal items for your mom. Rather, Black Market Provisions offers tasty food to go and “cool and rad things” such as a curated collection of gifts, housewares, pantry provisions, greeting cards, trinkets and treasures, and house made food ranging from soups and salads to cookies and ice cream.

Owned by couple Angela Farkas and Alana Fiks, these two are famous for their Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookies and homemade vegan soups and salads -- but you may have first met them at their Pop Carts at many outdoor Winnipeg events in summer.

BMP’s online shop allows you to create your own Mother’s Day gift box (or bag), with everything from chocolates and candy to bath salts and puzzles. Check it out and you’re sure to find the perfect combination to make your mom smile!

Note: Black Market Provisions is still closed to the public, but you can order online for next day pickup or delivery.

5. GoodLocal

No Winnipeg gift list would be complete without including GoodLocal: your one-stop shop for everything local. From groceries and essentials to jewellery and apparel, GoodLocal is an online marketplace like Amazon, except it directly benefits our friends and neighbours and contributes to our local economy.

In our Winnipeg Checklist video below, Alex has an in-depth conversation with Lynn about how GoodLocal has made it their mission to connect hundreds of local vendors with all Manitobans.

Check out GoodLocal’s Instagram page for their Mother’s Day gift guide for some curated items from local makers in Winnipeg, such as Jillian Leigh Jewellery, Cultured Herb, and Relish Soapery.
